Measure the Width
Width is the most critical measurement. Measure the full horizontal space available for the vanity from wall to wall (or wall to nearest obstruction such as a door, toilet, or shower).
- Measure at three heights — floor level, counter height (~34"), and wall level — and use the smallest number.
- Account for baseboards and trim. If baseboards protrude, subtract their depth (typically ¾") from each side they appear on.
- Choose the largest vanity size that fits with at least ½" clearance on each side for levelling and shimming.
Pro tip
If your space is exactly the width of a vanity (e.g., exactly 36"), go down one size. You need wiggle room to manoeuvre the vanity into position during installation.
Measure the Depth (Front to Back)
Our vanities are 21" deep (cabinet) with a countertop that extends to approximately 22". Measure from the back wall to the nearest obstruction in front (toilet, door swing, etc.).
- You need at least 22" of depth for the vanity itself.
- Add the required clearance in front: minimum 21" (code), 30" recommended.
- Total depth needed: at least 43" from back wall to opposite wall or toilet edge.
Check the Height
Our vanities stand 34" tall including the countertop — the modern comfort height standard. Check for anything above the vanity location that could interfere.
- Check for light fixtures, electrical outlets, or medicine cabinets mounted on the wall above.
- If replacing an existing vanity, note the old vanity's height — drywall behind it may need patching if switching heights.
- Allow 6–8" above the countertop for a backsplash (included with your vanity).
Locate Your Plumbing
Before ordering, locate and measure your existing rough-in plumbing. This will determine whether your vanity fits without plumbing modifications.
Drain (P-trap stub-out)
Measure from the left wall to the centre of the drain pipe coming out of the wall. Ideally, this should be within 3" of the centre of your vanity. Our vanities have a centred drain opening in the cabinet bottom. Standard drain height from floor: 14–16".
Water Supply Lines
Locate your hot and cold supply shut-offs. They should be within the cabinet footprint (within the width of the vanity). Standard supply line spacing: 8" apart, centred on the sink. Height from floor: 18–20". Flexible supply lines (not included) allow ±3" adjustment.
Check Door Swings & Clearance
A vanity that blocks a door is a costly mistake. Before finalising your size, check all nearby doors — bathroom entry, linen closet, and shower doors.
- Open every door fully and mark the arc on the floor with tape. Your vanity cannot extend into this arc.
- Vanity cabinet doors need at least 16" of clearance to open fully in front of the vanity.
- If a door swings toward the vanity wall, ensure the vanity edge doesn't conflict with the door handle or frame.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my space is between two standard sizes?
Always size down, not up. A vanity that is slightly smaller than the space looks intentional; one that doesn't fit is a problem. For example, if your opening is 34", choose a 30" vanity and use the extra space for a small storage nook or leave breathing room.
Does the vanity width include the countertop overhang?
Yes. The width we list is the total footprint including the countertop, which typically overhangs the cabinet by about 1" on each side. Make sure your measurement accounts for the full listed width.
How much space do I need in front of the vanity?
Building codes typically require a minimum of 21" of clearance in front of the vanity. For comfort, 30" is recommended. Check your local Ontario building code for requirements.
My drain is off-centre — will the vanity work?
Most of our vanities have an undermount sink centred in the countertop, which connects to a centred drain hole in the cabinet bottom. If your wall drain is significantly off-centre (more than 3–4"), you may need a plumber to relocate the drain stub-out. Contact us on WhatsApp to discuss your specific situation.
What is the standard vanity height?
Our vanities are 34" tall (including countertop), which is the modern "comfort height" — the same as standard kitchen counters. Traditional vanities were 32". If you have specific ergonomic needs, contact us before ordering.
Can I install the vanity myself?
Yes, with basic carpentry and plumbing skills. See our Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions. We always recommend hiring a licensed plumber for the water connections if you're not confident.
